US-Iran Tensions Spark Market Volatility Amid New Tariffs
Global markets suffered significant volatility this week due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The conflict has disrupted shipping through key lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, causing Brent crude prices to surge past $100 per barrel for the first time in two months.
The Trump administration's rollout of new tariffs on various goods from countries like Canada, Brazil, and 60 economies worldwide further contributed to market instability. The US government imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, effective August 19, targeting wine, cement, dairy products, hockey equipment, furniture, and apparel.
Meanwhile, the US military continued strikes on Iran, deploying B-1 bombers to enhance its strike capability against Iran. The country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated it had struck the Camp Arifjan and Camp Doha military bases in Kuwait and attacked US military electronic warfare units stationed there.
