US-Iran Truce Hopes Fade as Oil Prices Rise
Oil prices surged more than 2% on hopes that a US-Iran truce might be near, but those prospects dimmed after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian peace proposal. Despite this setback, the Trump administration remains committed to its hardline stance towards Iran, reportedly issuing ultimatums to Tehran's trading partners and warning them of severe consequences if they continue to engage in commerce with Iran.
The situation on the ground appears to be improving, however, as oil supplies from the Gulf show signs of recovery. In September, exports from the Middle East reached their highest levels since the conflict began, but overall sales remain significantly below pre-conflict levels.
