US-Iran War Becomes New Front in US-China Rivalry
The ongoing war between the United States and Iran has become more complex, with a second contest emerging alongside it. China is not directly fighting the US, but its economic, technological, and diplomatic ties to Iran are complicating Washington's strategy and ability to win the conflict.
China occupies a special position in Iran's wartime economy as its largest oil customer, accounting for 13-14% of China's oil imports before the war. Chinese refineries have played an outsize role due to their lesser exposure to the Western financial system compared to state-owned oil companies.
The US has responded by widening sanctions against Chinese companies and traders tied to Iranian oil and sensitive technology. This puts Washington in a tightening strategic bind, as sanctioning Iranian companies is one thing, but punishing major Chinese financial institutions could turn the conflict into an economic confrontation with China.
