US LNG Producers Eye Tariff Relief Ahead of Trump-Xi Meeting
The US liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry is watching this week's meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping for any sign that Beijing will remove tariffs on American LNG.
China imposed a 15% levy on imports of the super-chilled fuel from the US last year as trade tensions escalated, effectively halting flows between the world's biggest buyer and seller.
If China resumed importing all its contracted US supply for a full year, those shipments would be valued at roughly $6 billion at current prices.
Chinese companies have largely avoided signing new US contracts since the trade dispute erupted, creating a hurdle for several proposed American LNG export projects that rely on such deals to secure financing and start large-scale construction.
