US Natural Gas Inventories Surge, But Year-Over-Year Figures Remain Lower
US natural gas inventories saw an unexpected surge of 33 billion cubic feet (bcf) in the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report, surpassing market expectations of a 30 bcf increase and last week's build of 28 bcf.
This significant jump on paper might seem like a major boost for natural gas prices, but the real story lies beneath the surface. On a year-over-year basis, inventories were actually lower by 12 bcf, indicating that despite this recent increase, overall storage levels are still below last year's figures.
Furthermore, while total working gas remains within its historical five-year range, storage levels remain 195 bcf above the five-year average of 2,922 bcf. This could indicate a potential shift in market fundamentals as we head into the latter part of summer.
