US Seeks Domestic Critical Minerals Amid Global Supply Chain Risks

The US government has signed an executive order aimed at strengthening its domestic critical mineral supply chains by pushing for greater use of domestically sourced materials in defense procurement.

The order, signed by President Donald Trump, limits when defense contractors can obtain waivers to source critical minerals and components from foreign entities of concern. It also encourages contractors to qualify new domestic and allied suppliers.

Critical minerals such as yttrium, graphite, and rare earth elements are widely used in defense systems, AI technologies, and clean energy solutions.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) states that the country remains heavily reliant on minerals imported from China, which dominates production and processing of many critical minerals.

Arizona is leading the way in copper production, with several major projects underway. Resolution Copper, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP, could supply up to 25% of US copper demand if developed. However, its development has been stalled due to environmental concerns and legal battles.
