US-Sanctioned Oil Tanker Freed from Somali Pirates After Hijacking
A US-sanctioned oil tanker, Sibu 1, has been freed from Somali pirates after being hijacked in August. The Eritrea-flagged vessel was seized on August 20 by six armed individuals.
The Puntland Maritime Police Force carried out a counter-piracy operation and the ship is now free, with all the pirates in custody.
The Sibu 1 was placed under sanctions by the US Treasury in December for allegedly being part of a 'shadow fleet' that helps Iranian petroleum products evade US sanctions.
