US Secures Control of Venezuela's Vast Oil Reserves
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the US has secured majority control of over 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven oil reserves through a partnership with private business. The deal aims to revive Venezuela's battered energy industry and provide a new source of crude for the US, potentially lowering fuel prices.
The agreement would grant American companies long-term access to Venezuelan oil fields and guarantee the resulting crude supply to the US. This represents a significant expansion of the US role in Venezuela's oil industry, which has been hampered by years of underinvestment, mismanagement, and sanctions.
Venezuelan officials are set to sign agreements next week granting new oil exploration and production rights to several companies, particularly US firms. The deal would bring nearly $100 billion in private investment and support thousands of high-paying jobs, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
However, analysts have raised concerns about the agreement's legal and financial structure, as well as the potential obstacles that could deter investment in Venezuela. David Goldwyn, president of Goldwyn Global Strategies, questioned whether a US government lease would have a legal basis under Venezuela's constitution and new hydrocarbons law.
