US Secures Historic Concession in Venezuelan Oil Fields Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Rivalry
Following the ousting of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, the US secured a historic 100-year concession in Venezuela's oil fields. The deal was reached after Maduro's arrest during Operation Absolute Resolve, and it grants North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) a 17-oil-field concession containing approximately 65 billion barrels of proven reserves.
The agreement also gives the US government veto powers over NABEP directors' appointments and a 35% equity stake in NABEP's corporate parent company. In return, Venezuela will receive $100 billion worth of oil infrastructure investment and assistance in modernizing new hydrocarbon laws to drive economic growth in the region.
The deal has significant geopolitical implications, as it denies China and Russia access to the world's largest proven oil reserve in Venezuela. This move is part of a larger rivalry between the US, China, and Russia for control of strategic assets in the Western Hemisphere.
