US Secures Historic Deal with NABEP for Venezuelan Oil Development
The US government has reached an agreement with North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) to develop Venezuelan oil fields, marking a historic reset in the country's petroleum relationship.
The deal, announced by President Donald Trump on August 28, grants NABEP rights to 35% of the concessions and access to 20% of the output at production cost. The agreement also includes governance influence, with the US holding veto power over board appointments and a majority of US-citizen board members.
The Venezuelan oil deal is significant not only because it provides access to underground oil but also because it establishes a lasting financial and strategic position for the US in how that oil is developed and sold. NABEP plans to invest nearly $100 billion in development, with existing production above 200,000 barrels per day and a goal of exceeding 1 million.
The agreement marks a new opening in Venezuela's petroleum history, which has long involved negotiations over the balance between foreign investment, national control, and oil income distribution. The current arrangement follows 50 years after Venezuela nationalized its oil industry in 1976.
