US Secures Long-Term Oil Stake in Venezuela Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Tensions
The US has taken a significant step in its involvement in Venezuela's oil industry by securing a direct economic stake through a new agreement.
North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) has received 100-year concessions covering 17 Venezuelan oilfields with around 65 billion barrels of proven reserves, while the US government will have a 35% stake in NABEP's parent company and guaranteed access to part of its production.
This agreement is a result of cooperation between the US government and Venezuela's new leadership following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US forces eight months ago. While oil was not the reason for removing Maduro, it has become a significant factor in the country's economic recovery and a major source of revenue for both the US and Venezuela.
The agreement raises questions about sovereignty and whether future Venezuelan governments would continue to accept the same terms. It also creates uncertainty for investors expected to spend billions rebuilding oil infrastructure.
