US Secures Major Stake in Venezuela Oil Reserves Amid Global Supply Concerns
The United States has secured a major stake in Venezuela's oil resources, gaining preferential access to 17 oil fields holding approximately 65 billion barrels of reserves. This deal gives the U.S. a 35% interest in the operating structure and allows for access to 20% of production at cost, with first refusal on additional production. According to Kalim Shah, an expert in energy security and Caribbean governance, this arrangement could provide a new tool for managing future energy shocks.
Shah notes that the immediate effect on gasoline prices is likely to be limited. However, the longer-term potential of increased U.S. access to Venezuela's oil industry could reduce the country's vulnerability to future global supply disruptions while expanding its influence in the Caribbean.
The deal's significance extends beyond energy security, with Shah highlighting the potential economic benefits and risks for Venezuela. He also cautions that rebuilding Venezuela's damaged oil infrastructure may be a challenge for U.S. companies.
