US Shifts to Economic Sanctions Against Iran
US officials have revealed that the country is shifting its approach to dealing with Iran from military strikes to economic sanctions. This was outlined by Senator Marco Rubio in phone calls with several of his counterparts, including avoiding major combat operations against Iran for now.
The US has been increasing economic pressure on Iran through a naval blockade and new Treasury Department sanctions. The clearing of mines from the Strait of Hormuz by the US Navy is seen as a key moment in the war, neutralizing one of Iran's main sources of leverage.
US officials say that the clearing of mines and the growing volume of oil coming out of the Gulf has deprived Iran of a major card in any future negotiations. They believe this could drive the Iranians back to the table for talks.
The US is expected to maintain its current policy until after the midterm elections, when a new military campaign could be considered again.
