US Shuts Door on Iran's Airlines as Economic Pressure Mounts
The US Treasury has threatened to shut down Iranian airlines worldwide from September 23 by imposing secondary sanctions on foreign companies that provide them with aviation services. This move is part of the Trump administration's efforts to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that foreign airports, fuel suppliers, and ticketing companies may be prohibited from US financial systems if they continue to offer services to Iranian carriers in the dollar system.
The warning comes as Houthi forces in Yemen intensify pressure on major regional oil and shipping routes. The Houthis have reportedly reached the strategic island of Perim in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising concerns about another key route for global energy shipments.
