US Stocks Slip Amid Rising Oil Prices and Bond Market Pressure
The US stock market is experiencing a decline as oil prices and the bond market put pressure on Wall Street. The S&P 500 fell by 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 406 points, or 0.8%, to 2:03 p.m. Eastern time.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which is the centerpiece of the US bond market, has climbed to 5.01% from 4.97% late Monday and briefly touched 5.04% overnight. This jump in yields makes borrowing money more expensive for everyone, including households, businesses, and the government.
Darrell Cronk, president of Wells Fargo Investment Institute, stated that 'The result is a market that must work harder to generate earnings growth just as investors become less willing to pay premium valuations for that growth.'
