US Stocks Surge Towards Record Highs on Strong Earnings and Lower Oil Prices
The US stock market is on track to reach new heights as companies continue to post impressive profits and oil prices ease. The S&P 500 index rose 1.5% and is poised to surpass its all-time high set a couple of months ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 893 points, or 1.7%, to its own record high, while the Nasdaq composite gained 2.1%. Despite concerns about inflation, the war in Iran, and a potential bubble in AI technology stocks, Wall Street is moving forward due to strong corporate earnings.
Palantir Technologies led the way with a 26.8% surge after CEO Alex Karp announced an 'otherworldly' quarter with revenue growth of 93%. The company also raised its revenue forecast for the full year of 2026. Caterpillar climbed 5.8% after reporting stronger profit and revenue than expected, benefiting from increased orders for turbines used to power data centers.
The strong profits follow similar results from Amazon, Microsoft, and other companies in the S&P 500 index. With earnings per share growth of nearly 50% in the spring compared to last year, corporate profits are up while stock prices remain relatively steady. This has made stocks appear less expensive than before, according to Phil Segner, a co-portfolio manager at the Leuthold Group.
