The conflict between the US and Iran escalated Thursday as the US military launched 'a heavy wave of strikes' against Iran in response to an earlier Iranian missile attack on a US base in Jordan. The US, partnering with Saudi Arabia, struck dozens of targets belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, and coastal surveillance and defense sites.

The strikes came after the US President Donald Trump vowed to hit Iran 'very hard' following the Iranian attack on the base in Jordan. The renewed hostilities sent oil prices spiking, with Brent crude jumping 7.3% to $88.093 a barrel.

Iraq's government decried the US-Saudi attacks, saying that 'a number of innocent people' had been killed and wounded. At least 20 fighters were killed and six Iranian advisers were also killed in the strikes on Iraqi militias.
