US Surpasses Russia as World's Largest Crude Oil Producer
The United States took the top spot as the world's largest crude oil producer in 2025, producing an impressive 13.58 million barrels per day (mb/d), accounting for a 16% share of global production.
This milestone surpasses Russia, which held the position since 2018. In fact, the U.S. became the largest crude oil producer in history in 2023, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The Permian Basin, a sedimentary region spanning western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, contributes roughly a quarter of the country's production. Other major oil reserves are found in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.
The Middle East remains a significant player in global energy markets, with five countries ranking among the world's top 10 crude oil producers: Saudi Arabia (9.51 mb/d), Iraq (4.39), Iran (4.19), the United Arab Emirates (3.82), and Kuwait (2.58). These countries are core members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
