Food Prices Rise as Heatwaves Disrupt Global Supplies
Global food prices rose in July due to heatwaves and supply disruptions in key regions. The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported a 1% increase in the price of staple foods compared to the same month last year.
The FAO's Food Price Index showed that sugar prices surged by 5.6% in July, driven mainly by concerns over crop yields in Europe and Asia due to hot and dry weather. Cereals also saw a significant increase, rising by 3.4% from June to settle 6.9% above their July 2022 level.
Wheat prices rose 5.8%, while global maize prices increased by 3.6%. Vegetable oil prices reached their highest level since June 2022, increasing by 2% due to higher crude oil prices and demand from Indonesia's biodiesel sector.
