US Targets Countries Helping Iran's Oil Revenue
The Trump administration has launched a global crackdown on Iran's financial networks, labeling it 'economic D-Day.' US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says Washington is stepping up pressure not only on Tehran but also on countries and companies that help turn Iranian oil into revenue.
Nate Swanson, resident senior fellow and director of the Iran Strategy Project at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, notes that these sanctions target countries and companies that facilitate Iran's oil sales. According to Swanson, the US needs to take concrete actions for its sanctions threat to be credible.
The administration is calling on countries and companies to cut off their ties with Iran's financial networks, which are crucial for generating revenue from oil exports. The US aims to disrupt these networks by targeting entities that provide banking services, insurance, or other financial support to Iranian oil shipments.
