US Targets Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Escalating Maritime Tensions
The United States military launched airstrikes against three Iranian crude oil tankers on September 5. The strike came after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles towards two U.S. Navy warships in regional waters.
CNN reported that the American aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer avoided the Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel injured. Two Iranian tankers were disabled near Kharg Island and Jask, while a third vessel was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman.
The tankers targeted by the U.S. military are part of an oil network that helps finance the Revolutionary Guard and its regional partners. The strike adds to renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran and increases concerns about maritime security in the region.
