US Treasury's Bond Buyback Plan Sparks Gold Rally Amid Yield Curve Concerns
The US Treasury recently announced it would increase the scale of long-term government bond 'buybacks' to curb rising yields. This move, while not yield curve control (YCC), may represent a step in that direction, according to Mohamed El-Erian.
With yields falling and the dollar dropping in tandem, gold rose by 3% in response to the announcement.
The increased supply of government debt has raised concerns about its absorption capacity. Foreign official institutions are diversifying their reserve assets and dispersing dollar risk exposure, while banks face balance sheet constraints.
