US Unleashes 'Economic D-Day' Campaign Against Iran
The Trump administration has announced an 'economic D-day' campaign to target Iran's financial interests worldwide, vowing to choke off Tehran's revenues and isolate the country. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the effort as a 'pressure campaign' aimed at severing every economic lifeline that sustains the Iranian regime.
The sanctions will target all of Iran's sources of revenue, including oil, with the aim of preventing other countries and companies from doing business with Tehran. Bessent warned those who facilitate transactions with Iran to cease buying oil and trading with Tehran, emphasizing that 'no one is above the reach of US sanctions'. He also called on countries around the world to choose between supporting the US or Iran.
The campaign, dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast', comes nearly six months into the war with Iran after the US and Israel launched strikes against the country without direct provocation. The economic pressure campaign is the latest effort by the US to pressure Iran to make major concessions, including giving up its nuclear program and ceasing attacks on vessels in Hormuz.
New sanctions will target 'five of Iran's most vital lifelines': digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Bessent said US President Donald Trump has been making calls to world leaders with specific requests to cease their interaction with the regime.
