US Unveils Toughest-Ever Sanctions on Iran Amid Escalating Conflict
The US is preparing to impose its toughest-ever sanctions on Iran as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate. The new measures, set to be announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, are expected to target not only Iran but also countries that continue to trade with the Islamic Republic, particularly China.
According to data from Kpler, China accounted for over 80% of Iran's shipped oil purchases in 2025. The US has warned countries providing economic support to Tehran that they could face consequences, which could have significant implications for Beijing.
Tehran has strongly rejected Washington's planned measures, with Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei accusing the US of attempting to extend its authority beyond its own jurisdiction. He argued that so-called secondary sanctions targeting other countries lack a basis under international law.
