USDA Crop Progress Report Shows Mixed Harvest Results for Key Crops
The latest USDA Crop Progress report, released on October 5, 2026, provided an update on the maturity and harvest status of key crops across major producing states. Corn maturity in the 18 major producing states reached 83%, matching the five-year average, with harvest progress at 23%, slightly below the five-year average of 27%. State-level maturity varied significantly, from 30% in Michigan to 97% in Kansas and Tennessee, while harvest progress ranged from 2% in Michigan to 83% in Tennessee. Corn condition was rated predominantly good, with 42% in good condition and 12% in excellent condition.
Soybean harvest trailed the five-year average, with 25% of the crop harvested as of October 4, 2026, compared to the average of 33%. Soybean condition remained stable, with 46% rated good and 11% excellent. Cotton harvest progress stood at 23%, slightly above the five-year average of 21%, but bolls opening were below average at 74%. Cotton condition was mixed, with 27% rated good and 6% excellent.
Other crops also saw varied progress. Sorghum maturity was below the five-year average at 96%, with harvest at 32%. Peanuts were 22% harvested, slightly below the average of 23%. Sugarbeets were 87% harvested, sunflowers 85%, and rice harvest was complete. Winter wheat planting reached 90% of the 2025 acreage. The report also included pasture and range condition statistics for selected states.
