Utah's Electricity Prices Tied to Coal-to-Hydrogen Transition
Utah's electricity prices are relatively low compared to the national average. The state's residential rate is 13.29¢/kWh, which is roughly 22% below the national average.
The Intermountain Power Project (IPP) is a landmark effort to transition from coal to advanced gas and eventually hydrogen. This project will test whether hydrogen can anchor a former coal hub while preserving jobs, transmission rights-of-way, and regional reliability.
The IPP conversion from coal toward gas and green hydrogen is the state's headline energy story. The project aims to replace older coal units with 840 MW of advanced combined-cycle natural gas turbines engineered to co-fire hydrogen, with developers pointing toward a 100% hydrogen trajectory by 2045.
