Vaca Muerta Boom Fails to Lift Argentina's Struggling Economy

Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale province has seen record oil and near-record natural gas production in recent months, but the benefits appear to be confined mainly to the region. In May, crude oil output hit an all-time high of 887,227 barrels per day (bpd), up 19% from a year earlier.

Natural gas production rose by 5.4% in May 2026 from April and 11% from a year earlier, reaching 5.5 billion cubic feet per day. This was just shy of the record 5.7 billion cubic feet daily reported for July 2025.

However, outside the Vaca Muerta region, Argentina's economy continues to struggle with sluggish growth, high inflation, weak consumer spending, and business and mortgage defaults. The country is paying off its large external debts and loans it had taken on through the years.

The government hopes that the shale boom will trickle down into the overall economy, but this may be a challenge, according to analysts. 'The question is whether the new export sectors can generate enough spillovers for the rest of the economy, and whether they can do so quickly enough,' said Fernando Garcia and Lucila Venturi.
