Vance Optimistic on Alaska LNG Pipeline Despite South Korea Concerns
US Vice President JD Vance confirmed on Monday that the long-anticipated Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline project remains on track, though some details still need to be resolved with South Korea. Last week, President Donald Trump announced plans for South Korea to invest $200 billion in US projects, including the Alaska pipeline. However, Seoul later clarified that the LNG project was not yet finalized.
Vance told reporters in Washington that he believed the project would move forward, acknowledging that further discussions were necessary. He emphasized the strong demand for American natural gas, stating, "I think we’re going to be able to get it done."
South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il announced that the government would begin reviewing the investment to assess its commercial viability. Lee noted that the US also recognized the importance of commercial reasonableness. Meanwhile, South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan highlighted the strategic value of the project, particularly due to energy supply disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
