Vance pushes Korea to finalize Alaska LNG investment
U.S. Vice President JD Vance has urged South Korea to finalize its investment in the Alaska LNG project, emphasizing that further negotiations are necessary. Speaking to reporters before departing for Alaska on October 5, Vance acknowledged that while Korea has expressed interest, key details still need to be resolved. The Alaska LNG project involves constructing a 1,300-kilometer pipeline and related infrastructure to transport natural gas from the North Slope to the port of Nikiski.
Earlier, President Trump had announced that Korea had decided to invest over $50 billion in the project, though the Korean government has yet to confirm this, stating that consultations with the U.S. are ongoing. Trump has pressured Korea to reach an agreement, suggesting that delays could lead to higher costs. Vance, however, remains optimistic, noting that multiple countries, including Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asian nations, are eager for the project to succeed due to strong global demand for U.S. natural gas.
