Venezuela Oil Deal to Replenish US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
US President Donald Trump announced on social media that his administration will replenish the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve using oil from a deal struck with Venezuela. The reserve has been drawn down to near historic lows, holding about 290 million barrels as of August 21.
The 'topping out' process is set to begin shortly, according to Trump, who described the Venezuelan oil as a 'Gift from Venezuela to the People of the United States'. However, it's unclear how quickly the deal will provide oil for the reserve or deliver any near-term benefit to US motorists.
The agreement aims to revive Venezuela's battered oil industry, requiring significant investment and infrastructure work before production can rise substantially. The project involves developing 17 strategic oilfields with an initial production target of 1.5 million barrels per day.
Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez said the deal will allow Caracas to preserve 'ownership of and sovereignty' of its resources while leveraging capital, technology, and operational expertise to support the recovery of a strategic industry affected by sanctions.
