Veteran Educator and Geologist James R. Lauffer Passes Away at 91
James R. Lauffer, Ph.D., a renowned geologist and educator, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 9, 1934, in Manor, Pennsylvania, Jim graduated from Irwin High School in 1952 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Allegheny College. He met his wife, Marilyn, while studying there, and they were married for an impressive 69 years.
Jim's career spanned various roles, including working in oil production in Alberta, Canada, and the Soil Conservation Service in Harrisburg. He then transitioned to teaching, becoming a science teacher and later the Planetarium Director at Hempfield Area High School. During his teaching years, Jim earned three National Science Foundation Fellowships for continued study.
Jim's passion for education led him to accept a position as a professor of Geography, Earth Science, and Oceanography at Bloomsburg University in 1966. He spent 30 years there, retiring in 1996. Throughout his life, Jim was driven by a desire to share his knowledge with others and foster a love for nature and learning.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg on October 10, 2026, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
