Vietnam Struggles to Meet LNG Power Expansion Deadlines
Vietnam’s ambitious plans to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fired power capacity are falling significantly behind schedule. Only one of the 18 planned gas-fired power projects is expected to be completed on time. The projects, which aim to add over 20 gigawatts of capacity, are crucial for meeting the country’s growing electricity demand.
During a government meeting last week, Industry and Trade Minister Le Manh Hung confirmed that just the LNG Hiep Phuoc project is on track. Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Truong Thanh Hoai noted that while 16 of the 18 projects have secured investors, only two have begun construction.
The delay in these projects highlights the challenges Vietnam faces in rapidly scaling up its energy infrastructure. The slow progress could impact the country’s ability to keep up with rising electricity needs, particularly as it transitions toward more sustainable energy sources.
