Virginia Farm Struggles with Rising Fuel Costs Impacting Pumpkin Prices
Richdale Farm in Wytheville, Virginia, a family-owned business celebrating 150 years, is facing challenges due to rising fuel costs. Aaron Crowgey, who runs the farm, noted that higher fuel prices are impacting the entire agricultural sector, particularly by driving up corn prices. The farm delivers pumpkins to the executive mansion, but the rising cost of fuel is making it more expensive to transport produce to market.
Crowgey explained that wholesale pumpkin prices have dropped because brokers must cover the increased trucking costs. This reduction in revenue is affecting the farm's earnings during the fall season. During a recent event, Governor Abigail Spanberger acknowledged the difficulties families and businesses are facing due to rising prices, stating that the state is working to lower costs where possible.
According to AAA, the national average for gas is around $4.36 per gallon, while diesel stands at $6.32 per gallon. Morgan Dean, a spokesperson for AAA, noted that fuel prices have been fluctuating based on crude oil prices. Dean emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Iran and the situation between Russia and Ukraine will influence future fuel costs, though predicting exact price movements remains uncertain.
