VNG AG Eyes Long-Term Gas Deals with Azerbaijan
VNG AG, a European energy company, is exploring long-term gas supply agreements with Azerbaijan, potentially spanning 15 to 20 years. Oliver Hill, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Development at VNG AG, shared this during a panel session at the German-Azerbaijani Connectivity Conference in Baku. He emphasized that the collaboration with Azerbaijan includes both immediate and future objectives, with the short-term focus on securing reliable gas supplies for Europe and the long-term aim of transitioning to a decarbonized energy system.
Hill noted that VNG AG has already begun importing natural gas from Azerbaijan this year, though the current volumes are modest. He described this as the first step in a broader strategy to increase gas imports from Azerbaijan. The company is also interested in developing energy transition initiatives between Europe and Azerbaijan, including decarbonization and the establishment of new energy connections.
VNG AG is open to signing long-term gas supply contracts with Azerbaijan for 15 to 20 years. Hill suggested that increasing Azerbaijan's investment in renewable energy could free up more natural gas for export to Europe, boosting revenues and funding further infrastructure development. In the longer term, this could pave the way for supplying Europe with alternative energy forms, such as hydrogen and biomethane.
