VNG AG Seeks Long-Term Deal to Boost Azerbaijani Gas Imports
Germany’s VNG AG is exploring a significant expansion of its natural gas imports from Azerbaijan, with plans to secure a long-term supply agreement lasting between 15 and 20 years. Oliver Hill, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Development at VNG AG, highlighted the company’s interest in deepening cooperation with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). The discussions extend beyond traditional gas supplies, suggesting a broader strategic partnership.
During his remarks, Hill noted that VNG currently imports a substantial amount of Azerbaijani natural gas, though specific figures were not disclosed due to access restrictions. The company’s push for a long-term deal underscores its commitment to diversifying energy sources amid global supply challenges.
The potential agreement reflects a growing trend among European energy firms to strengthen ties with alternative gas suppliers as they seek to reduce dependence on other regions. VNG’s initiative could set a precedent for similar long-term contracts in the European energy market.
