Volatility Returns to Grain Markets as Weather and Fund Activity Take Center Stage
Grain markets experienced another volatile week due to changing weather forecasts, weaker outside markets, and speculative selling. Jeff Peterson of Heartland Farm Partners stated that the market was under pressure from the unwinding of several layers of premium that had been added earlier.
Premiums were previously driven by weather concerns, crude oil strength, and global shipping risk, but warmer and drier conditions last week, Middle East tensions, and Black Sea concerns supported prices before they began to unwind.
As forecasts turned wetter and geopolitical premium faded, speculative traders continued to sell, hitting key support levels. Peterson expects additional pressure in Monday's USDA Crop Progress report but does not anticipate a dramatic ratings collapse.
