WA Farmers Eye Record Crop as Global Demand Soars
Western Australian farmers are expected to produce a record crop of 30 million tonnes in the coming years, according to Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development economic analysis team member Ross Kingwell. This growth is driven by innovation, including better water use efficiency, improved varieties, and reduced sheep populations.
The adoption of canola has been particularly significant, as it provides a profitable alternative to wheat and helps with weed control. WA's crop area and grain yields continue to grow each year, reaching 25 million tonnes in recent years.
Most of the demand for grain in Western Australia is met through export, primarily to Asia. The global population is expected to increase significantly in the next two decades, driving up demand for food that uses grain.
