Wall Street Awaits Fed Decision as Inflation Fears Linger
Wall Street is holding steady on Wednesday as investors wait for the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% and was on track for its second gain in eight days, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 34 points, or 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite increased by 0.8%, helped by easing oil prices and bond yields.
The price of Brent crude oil fell 2.5% to $106.07 per barrel, down from nearly $110 earlier in the week due to concerns about the war with Iran disrupting global oil supplies. This decline also led to a decrease in the yield on the 10-year Treasury, which is now at 4.95%, down from 5.00% late Tuesday.
Despite this easing, investors remain worried about high inflation and expect the Fed to announce a rate hike later in the day to combat it. This move would increase borrowing costs and slow the economy, potentially reducing fuel for price increases. However, some traders still see a slight chance that the Fed may hold off on raising rates, which could cause market uncertainty.
A report showing strong retail sales growth in the US last month may support the Fed's decision to raise interest rates. Stocks in the artificial-intelligence industry, such as Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, also rose after leaders of the AI industry called for a slowdown in development to address safety concerns.
