Wall Street Pauses for Breath as Oil Prices, Yields Halt Surge
U.S. stocks climbed higher on Wednesday as oil prices and Treasury yields paused their upward surge, providing some relief to equity markets.
The S&P 500 index rose 0.5% to 7,669.53 points, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite gained 0.4% to 26,208.17 points. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 0.7% to 53,155.58 points.
The surge in bond yields has been squeezing Wall Street equity valuations as investors reassess their expectations for future corporate cash flows using benchmark Treasury yields. As yields rise, the discount rate increases, shrinking the present value of future earnings and affecting high-duration growth sectors, particularly technology, software, and semiconductor names.
The persistence of energy-driven inflation fears has led to a sharp increase in the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the Fed's September 16 policy meeting, with traders now pricing in a 67.9% chance following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish comments. Market focus is locked onto Friday's August nonfarm payrolls report and next week's August CPI print.
