Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech Sends Gold Prices Plummeting
Gold prices plummeted by over 1% on Friday, August 28th, following a speech by US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the annual Jackson Hole Symposium in Wyoming. In his address, Warsh hinted that interest rate hikes may be necessary to combat high inflation in the US.
The Fed chief acknowledged that inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target and emphasized that 'we must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do.'
Warsh's comments sent gold prices tumbling, with spot gold falling by 0.8% to $4,563.05 per ounce. In India, the precious metal was trading at ₹1,56,780 per 10 grams, down ₹2,830 or 1.770%, according to data on a bullion website.
Independent analyst Tai Wong noted that Warsh's emphasis on fighting inflation will likely make the market price the September meeting as a coin flip, suggesting uncertainty about future rate hikes.
