WASDE Report Sparks Grain Market Rally Amid Yield Cuts and Harvest Adjustments
Grain markets surged on Wednesday following the release of the USDA's August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report.
The report sparked a rally in grain futures, with corn, soybeans, and wheat all seeing significant price increases. The USDA cut its U.S. corn yield estimate to 180.5 bushels per acre, a reduction of 2.5 bushels from the previous month's estimate.
This decrease was partially offset by an increase in harvested area, which added 1.2 million acres to the total crop size. The resulting projection puts the 2026 U.S. corn crop at 16 billion bushels, making it the second-largest harvest on record.
However, production still falls short of forecasted demand by 320 million bushels, leaving a significant gap in the market. As a result, the average cash value for corn increased by 10 cents to $4.50 per bushel.
