Washington Wheat Growers Seek Certainty in New Farm Bill
The Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) is calling on Congress to act quickly after the expiration of the latest extension of the 2018 Farm Bill. The bill, which expired on September 30, provides federal programs that support farm income, conservation, trade, research, and rural communities.
While not all farm programs end immediately, the lack of a long-term bill creates uncertainty for Washington wheat growers. Federal crop insurance is permanently authorized, but other programs may lapse or become difficult to administer.
WAWG president Gil Crosby emphasized that the farm bill shapes decisions across operations, including seed and fertilizer purchases, financing, and conservation efforts. 'Washington growers need a dependable safety net and clear rules, not another season of uncertainty,' he said.
