West Asian Tensions Drive Crude Oil Prices to Record Highs Above $90 a Barrel

Crude oil prices have surged to new highs after the US and Iran launched fresh attacks against each other's positions, pushing Brent crude above $90 a barrel. The tensions in West Asia have heightened uncertainty in international markets, driving up crude oil prices. Brent crude began trading today at $89.455 per barrel, up $1.35, and within minutes of the start of trading, it crossed the $90-per-barrel threshold.

The US strike on two launchers on an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz was aimed at securing greater control over the strategic waterway. Iran retaliated with strikes on two American bases in Jordan, making it clear that Tehran is unwilling to back down in the face of US military action. Market experts warn that crude oil prices could surge further if the conflict persists.

TNV Financial Services CEO Tarkeshwar Nath Vaishnav said a prolonged period of elevated crude oil prices could widen India's current account deficit and put pressure on the government's fiscal deficit target. Higher crude prices could also weaken the Indian currency, fuel inflation, and accelerate foreign capital outflows.
