Westward-Bound Alberta Engineer Leaves Lasting Legacy

James Malcolm MacQuarrie was a man of adventure and strong work ethic, who spent his early years on Prince Edward Island before moving west to Alberta in 1952. After working briefly in Toronto, he settled in Calgary, where he met his wife Marjorie and built a career in the energy and engineering industries.

MacQuarrie worked for gas utilities and Shell Oil, later earning a Civil Engineering degree from the University of North Dakota after moving to North Dakota with his family. He returned to Calgary, founded Mermac Construction, and continued his engineering career with Stearns Roger Engineering and Construction until his retirement in 1993.

A lifetime member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta (APEGA), MacQuarrie lived a full life, moving to Parksville, British Columbia in 2005, and later to Kamloops in 2018. He will be remembered by his family and loved ones for his determination, knowledge, and commitment to his profession.
