The global wheat market has hit a three-year high due to concerns over Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. The price of Chicago wheat rose by 2.6% after increasing by 6.4% the previous day, bringing its total rise since August to approximately 19%. This is the highest level seen since July 2023.

Russia and Ukraine are key suppliers of grain to the global market, accounting for over a quarter of global wheat exports as well as significant volumes of barley, corn, and sunflower oil. The war has already damaged Ukrainian ports and grain terminals, limiting export opportunities.

The market fears that if Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine, particularly against infrastructure, the supply situation could worsen even further. Bloomberg reports that negotiations on a peace agreement have reached an impasse, leading to concerns about logistical restrictions in the event of an escalation of the conflict.
