Wheat Prices Soar as Russia-Ukraine Conflict Escalates
Chicago wheat futures reached their highest level in three years as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate. The market remains focused on the military conflict, which has severely impacted Russian and Ukrainian exports. On August 30th, the most-active wheat futures rose to $7.90-1/4 per bushel, surpassing previous highs set earlier this week.
A report emerged that Russia was considering increasing missile strikes on Ukraine, casting doubts on a swift recovery in Black Sea shipments. In recent weeks, tit-for-tat attacks have brought grain loadings at Russian and Ukrainian ports to a virtual standstill. News of a commercial vessel sinking off the coast of Romania further heightened concerns over war risks to shipping in the region.
In Ukraine, officials stated that the 2027 planting campaign is under threat due to farmers' lack of funds to sow crops. This follows Russia's blockade of sea ports, which has drastically curtailed exports. Traders remain cautious as the situation continues to unfold.
