Wheat Prices Surge 54.5% YTD as Corn Hits Multi-Year High
Corn and wheat futures have reached multi-year highs due to divergent supply threats. Wheat prices surged to $7.84 per bushel, a 12.1% weekly gain and the highest level since February 14, 2023.
The rally in corn futures is largely attributed to growing anxiety over U.S. production and a weaker-than-expected output outlook. The recent climb in corn prices is supported by tighter U.S. supply expectations and robust demand, with constrained Ukrainian exports adding further pressure on global stocks.
Extreme heat and drought across Europe over the summer substantially reduced corn output there. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report lowered corn yield forecasts more sharply than traders anticipated.
