Wheat Rebounds as Conflict Disrupts Supply Chains
The Chicago wheat futures market has seen a rebound of over 3% today as investors factor in a sustained reduction in supply due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The war effort is disrupting key logistics routes, impacting exports from both countries.
Hopes for diplomatic progress in the war were temporarily boosted by visits from US diplomats Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv, but these efforts appear to have stalled.
The temporary decline in geopolitical risk premium has returned as negotiations faltered. To mitigate exporters' costs, Russia has suspended export duties on wheat, barley, and corn until the end of 2026. However, rail and port capacity constraints continue to limit shipment volumes.
