Wildfires Threaten Canada's Oil Sands Production

Wildfires have broken out in Canada's oil sands region of Alberta, threatening crude production. Six out-of-control fires are burning in the Lac la Biche region, with the largest blaze covering over 2,400 acres. Major oilsands sites, including Cenovus Energy Inc.'s Christina Lake and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.'s Jackfish and Kirby North, are within 19 kilometers of the wildfires.

The fires pose a threat to oil production in Canada, which is already curtailed by up to 20% due to the Iran war. The region's proximity to the blazes raises concerns about potential disruptions to operations at oil and gas facilities. Nearby wildfires last summer shut down around 7% of the country's oil production.

The Alberta Wildfire agency reports that the largest blaze is 1,000 hectares in size, with several nearby communities on high alert for potential evacuation. The community of Conklin has been told to prepare to evacuate if necessary.
