Wind-Assisted Propulsion System Scores Breakthrough in LNG Carrier Design
Lloyd's Register has granted a Design Appraisal for an innovative LNG carrier design from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries that incorporates the Wind Challenger wind-assisted propulsion system developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.
The classification society said the appraisal confirms the concept meets the requirements of its Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems notation.
The project, which was presented at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, involves relocating the accommodation block and bridge to the bow, freeing up a clear deck area from midships to the stern for the Wind Challenger hard sails while preserving operational and navigational requirements.
